The stone soup
Once upon a time, three monks,Hok,Lok and Siew, travelled along a mountain road.Hok,he youngest, asked,"What makes people happy?" Siew, the oldest, who was also the most intelligent, said,"Let's go and find it."
Then they came into a war-torn village, where people didi not trust strangers, and were even suspicious of their neighbours. When the three monks entered the village, doors were tightly closed and windows were shut. They knocked at one door, but no one answered, and the lights were turned off afterwards.
"They don't know what happiness is," said Siew.
The monks pulled an iron pot from their bundle, filled it with water, and built a fire under it.Then, with great ceremony,Siew drew three ordinary-looking stones from a velvet bag and dropped them into tne water.
By now, hearing rumour of food, most of the villagers had come to the square or watched from their windows.
"Ahh",Siew said loudly," I do like a tasty stone soup.Of course, stone soup with cabbage----that's hard to beat."
Soon a villager approached hesitantly, holding a cabbage he'd got from its hiding place, and added it to the pot." Terrific!" cried Siew." You konw,I once had stone soup with cabbage and a bit of salt beef as well, and it was fit for a king."
