The NT Airport Security Union has called on police to thoroughly investigate and prosecute a female interstate traveller who assaulted a union member at Darwin International Airport - the latest example of airport rage.
Group 4 Security officer,Susan Cuttriss,was assaulted carrying out her job as an airport security officer in Darwin,LHMU NT Airport Security Union official,Dianne Yali said today.
" A Budget rental car driver,angry about being fined,spat across Susan's face - hitting her on the right side of the face,shoulder and chest,as well as on the back of the right hand.
" This assault came after our member suffered verbal abuse from this woman who had been fined by security workers - as part of their duty - for leaving a vehicle unattended at the airport terminal."
Unfortunately this is not the first case of airport rage reported to Darwin police by the LHMU Airport Security Union - and that is why the union is pressing for action.
" Our union believes that management and the police must work closely with our people to look at ways of successfully tackling airport rage incidents," Di Yali said.
"All working people have the right to expect to be able to work in a safe and secure environment - no one deserves this treatment."
Ms Yali said that after being spat at the traveller jumped into her rented car and raced off into Darwin.The details of the incident and the car have been reported to police,airport management and Budget car rentals.
" Susan has never ever before been assaulted in all the years she has been working as a security guard.She was in shock,Dianne Yali said.
In an incident report handed to the airport management Susan Cuttriss told them:" I was totally appalled and could not believe what had just been done to me.I felt disgusted and instantly thought of the health issues,disease and the like.
" I feel sick in the stomach and extremely angry that someone would be so vile," Susan said.
Worried about the health implications of the spittle Susan immediately went to wash the spittle from her face,hand and clothes - but she is still to be satisfied that either airport management or police are treating this regular recurring problem seriously.
