答案是A,可是我想选C,把 later in the afternoon 作为时间状语,不知对否?请高手解惑.

late是形容词和副词：表示的是迟的,晚了的意思
而later是late的比较级形式,比...晚,或者做时间副词表示随后,稍后
前半句意思是说“到得晚了”,没有比较的含义,也不表示“稍后”所以不能用later.
later in the afternoon的意思是：“那天下午稍晚一些时候”在此之前还应该有“早一些时候”发生的事情.如果没有这样的比较,later在这里就不可用.
后半句中的work late into the night是习惯表达,“工作到深夜”记住即可.
